About York

York is one of the most popular cities in the United Kingdom with 7 million visitors per year. Whether you’re heading to the city to learn about its Viking and Roman history, to shop in the medieval streets, to visit one of the museums or historic houses, to experience one of the many festivals held throughout the year or to visit family and friends, you’ll be sure of a real Yorkshire welcome.

Click here for a great video of the city and surrounding areas.

Alcuin Lodge is ideally located to provide bed and breakfast accommodation - set in a quiet residential area but with all the historic and modern attractions of York on the doorstep.

If you’re interested in finding out about the background of the city, click history of York  to find details from prehistoric settlement through to the present day. Here’s a  quick summary video.

The main visitor attractions and information about what’s on can be found on the Visitor Information website.

The Way of the Roses cross-country cycle route passes only a few hundred metres behind Alcuin lodge.

York is known as the City of Festivals, with events throughout the year, including the Viking Festival, the Festival of Food and Drink, the St Nicholas Fayre with great Christmas shopping.

We also have frequent speciality markets in the city centre, including craft markets, ethical markets and food markets and of course, our famous Christmas market.

York Racecourse holds regular racing meets and hosts concerts and other activities throughout the year. Early booking of accommodation is advised for these very popular events.

You can create your own self-guided walk using "GPSmyCity" and choosing the attractions you'd like to see - it's a great tool and easy to use. Just click here to start planning your walk from Alcuin Lodge.

Top things to see and do in York:

Walk the walls –  the longest city walls in the UK, originally built by the Romans or explore the "Snickelways of York"  or perhaps follow the York Cat Trail

Visit York Minster – the second largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, with incredible views from the top of the tower

Shop along The Shambles – the street is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and is so narrow that you can touch both sides with your arms outstretched

Take tea at Betty's Tea Rooms – designed by the same craftsmen who built the RMS Queen Mary (sister ship of the Titanic)

Visit one of the many museums:) York Castle Museum (including the famous Victorian Street) Jorvik Viking Centre (with its award winning reconstruction of Viking York) National Railway Museum (home of the Flying Scotsman) Yorkshire Museum and York Art Gallery.

Take a Ghost Walk – be prepared to be scared

…Or  just enjoy taking in the sights and sounds of our vibrant and historic city. There’s always something happening, whether it’s a street market, singers and other buskers and an almost endless choice of cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs, modern bars, three theatres - Grand Opera House, Theatre Royal, Joseph Rowntree Theatre, Barbican Centre concert / events hall, National Centre for Early Music and three cinema complexes.
